Question:  Who are these nuts that have webcams and know how to use them?

Answer:  The Carlsons, of course!  Below is Erick, the cutest toddler to ever eat crayons.

Pretty cute, eh?  Erick turned 3 on June 23rd.

Question:  Why put up a webpage?

Answer:  We thought it would be interesting to be able to remotely view our house at any time.  The idea just grew naturally from that.  Living right up on the Boulevard presents a unique set of benefits and challenges.  Almost everyday something very exciting happens, like a parade or a police traffic stop (25 mile per hour speed limit strictly observed).  Being from a town much smaller than Roman Forest I consider that highly newsworthy and dramatic.  On the downside there is a lot of traffic in front of and beside our house, so we don't get to run around our front yard nekkid.  That also might lower property values and burn holes in the retinas of fellow Roministas.

I was serious when I said the Fourth of July parade comes right by my house.  It's the best little slice of Americana going.  Here's the 2005 parade.

Question:  Where in the heck is Roman Forest?

Answer:  Roman Forest is a small town of slightly more than 1,200 people located north of Houston, Texas.  Most people see the columns on Highway 59 and wonder about them. They also ask a lot of questions when we tell them where we live.  The best part of Roman Forest are the cool street names (Chariot, Constantine, Gladiator Drive).  The next best thing -- it's not Kingwood (no traffic jams, no crazy homeowner's association, no 1/4th acre lots, no need to park in the street).  We've lived here almost two years and really like it.  Good people, nice place.

The columns people are so curious about.  Other municipalities that can be accessed from Roman Forest Boulevard are Woodbranch, Woodway, and Patton Village.

Question:  What am I looking at on the webcam?

Answer:  You are looking at our view of Roman Forest Boulevard from one of our bedroom windows.  No, I'm not going to put my address on here, but anybody with a decent curiosity should be able to figure it out.  I have tried to angle the camera to exclude innocent neighbors from the onslaught on constant internet exposure.

We have a rock star view of the Fourth of July fireworks from the West side of our house.  Party at my house, next year!  E-mail for details.  Photo taken at the 2005 show.

Question:  What are the technical aspects/underlying technical philosophy of this webpage?

Answer:  Simple is better.  I tried to make this website small so that slow computers/slow internet connections could easily view its content.  I've done fancy-pants pages with frames, java, and CGI in previous lives and it's not worth it to me anymore; it's just more to go wrong.  I'm using two Logitech Quickcam 4000s (retail value - $50 per cam on sale).  Active WebCam is the software that constantly uploads it to the internet.

If you can't see the cams or the images are frozen it probably can be attributed to one of four things:  1) We had to reboot our computer and the ActiveCam has not yet reloaded  2)  Our electricity is off  3)  Our cable modem isn't working, which happens a lot in wet weather 4)  It is night and hence dark outside.  Clicking "reload" on your browser will most likely fix the first three.  We just had a rough spell where we had a lightning strike and a month of server-side trouble.  All seems to be straightened out now.

One of our cats.  Orange Kitty is a Persian whose hobbies are catching lizards, napping and using the potty in Mommy's flowerbeds.  Generally a worthless beast, but we like him.

Question:  Who the heck has time to sit around and look at your webcam?

Answer:  More people than you would think.  About 10% of our visitors our international.  I'm keeping track of the countries here.  It's tough being an international superstar, haha.  We have lots of locals who visit the site and occasionally e-mail.  Drop by, we'd love to meet you.
