HISTORY: This bike was designed after a boat. Good thing, too, because it used quite a few boat parts. The steering wheel is from a boat, as are the cables that run to the fork. The intention had been for quite some time to put a steering wheel on a bike, and since a bike that steered in the back instead of the front was also wanted, they seemed to fit well enough together.

This thing took a long while to make. Fortunately, the boat parts were all there. The steering wheel is from a motorboat, the steel plate it sits on is from a basketball hoop backing, and the rest is simple schedule 40 steel pipe. A water-style frame was used to start with, which gave a really long frame style to work the steering into.

More recent additions to this bike are an old hood ornament (a leaping puma or jaguar) and usually we strap a boom box to the front so music can be played while we ride.

The main problem with this bike is the pedals. A "bolt-on" set of pedals were tried, and failed. First we had cotter pin failure, and the pedals were looser than hell. So we got new cotter pins. The pressure on pedals is too much to rely on bolts, so the pedals then fell off in the middle of a ride. So I welded the corners (about 1 inch welds). And they snapped the welds. So I completely welded the thing on, inside and out. It has yet to snap this particular weld.

This bike has had a good fate. When moving to Georgia, this bike was too big to take down. However, SCUL was more than happy to give this bike a good home. So, before doing that, Zeus completely replaced the pedal set that was giving him so much trouble, with almost new stock, cleaned and lubed. He gave it a paint job, and as a gift to SCUL, even made a shiney skull hood ornament for the bike, that turned when the bike turned, and has a button on the back to make the eyes light up. From what I assume, the bike is being loved by SCUL. As usual, we took pictures before giving the bike away.
