I recently participated in a three-day workshop with Bill Sadler who wrote The
Third Age - Six Principles of Growth and Renewal After Forty. The workshop
focused on principles he developed in view of some significant changes that
impact all of us.
For example, in 18th century America, the average life span was barely 40, and
now most Americans will live to be almost 80. The time is fast approaching when
the U.S. population of adults over 60 will be double that of schoolchildren.
Between 1960 and 2000, the number of Americans over the age of 100 (known as
centenarians) increased from 3,000 to more than 70,000. This is the fastest
growing segment of our population, and it is estimated that 50% of girls born in
the U.S. today will live to be over 100.
Much of what we have considered aging is in reality disease and degeneration
from inactivity, bodily abuse, and neglect. We will dramatically change the way
we age if we take much better care of our physical condition. The leading
causes of death now are the consequences of our lifestyles such as heart and
cerebrovascular disease, cancer, cirrhosis and accidents.
An article in the January/February 2002 issue of Modern Maturity describes how
exercise benefits our brains. "The older brain is capable of rebuilding its
weakened structures through a process called neurogenesis (the creation of nerve
cells), and exercise stimulates the production of all kinds of wonderful
molecules that keep brain cells strong. Regular exercise (such as vigorous
walking) is the closest thing to an anti-aging pill now available."
Sadler says, "Your goal should be to live young while growing older and to die
young as late as possible."
Let's take good care of each other and ourselves and live long, healthy
lives.

Paul Hood, 3109 Oak Ridge Drive, was in a car accident on route 2147, Thursday
10th of January. His pickup was a total write-off.
He was helicoptered to Austin and is in Brackenridge Hospital in ICU with a
severe back injury and a head wound; back surgery is planned. Florine said the
doctors can't believe he's 80!
Paul has maintained his lucidity the entire
time and apparently never lost consciousness.
Florine welcomes rides to Austin.

We sure appreciate being able to send the ACORN out on the web; it saves lots of
time for our volunteers for mass mailing and reduces POA costs for office
supplies/stamps. So, if you have an email address you are not already sharing
with us, please let us know by emailing it to ilblount@tstar.net.
Also keep us in mind when you change your email address!
We would also like our treasurer, Wilda Meixner, to spend less time on the
billing side. The new accounting software she is using can send invoices out
via email. Wilda will send out reminders for the EMS/Fire in February for those
who have not paid yet, and in March/April she will send out our annual billing.
If you don't want your bills to be delivered via email, let her know by emailing
her at wilda@tstar.net.

The LCRA Board of Directors has appointed area residents to serve on nine
advisory panels that advise LCRA on issues affecting the Highland Lakes and
tributaries.
Additionally, the LCRA has begun developing safety standards for
docks on the Highland Lakes. Some of the issues identified include abandoned
and dilapidated docks, minimum navigable passage, maximum distance from shore,
dock identification, maximum size and height of docks, etc. A first draft of
the standards has been prepared and is being circulated to various residents for
comment. If you are interested in seeing a copy of the draft, please contact
the Acorn, and we will arrange for you to get a copy. Written comments are due
back by February 28th.
The LCRA Board is to be commended for its efforts to gather citizen input on a
variety of lake management issues.

To reduce the number of burn piles in the community and to be more
friendly to our environment, Steve Muller has volunteered to periodically haul
brush from Oak Ridge to a facility in Horseshoe Bay where the material will be
shredded and used for mulch.
Utilizing Steve's voluntary efforts will also help keep us more in compliance
with the Outdoor Burning Rules of the Texas Natural Resource Conservation
Commission (TNRCC). You can hear more about ways to keep Oak Ridge safe from
brush fires during our March 22nd POA meeting when Mr. P.J. Pearson of the Texas
Forest Service will provide a twenty minute presentation.
Please call Steve Muller (598-4856) or A.D. Robinett (598-4263) to arrange to
have a brush pile removed from your property.
