Several months ago, before the heat arrived, a group of neighbors put in a lot
of hours to establish a neighborhood flower garden at the Community Center, on
the site of the former restrooms. The site was prepared by Dick Heilman, Joe
Toohey, Ivy Parizek, and Tom Graham. They removed grass, tilled it, added
manure and compost, installed edging, and covered it with mulch.
The mulch was donated by Joe and Carol Toohey, concrete and mulch by Dick, and
edging and pavers by Tom. The arbor was constructed and delivered by Mark
Henley at cost of materials, and inset in concrete by Dick, Tom, and Bruce
Parizek. Dick, Tom and Joe set in pavers under the arbor, and Beth and Dean
Morgan donated the garden bench under the arbor.
Ivy and Bruce donated and installed the drip irrigation system, and donated
money for some of the plants. The cost of material for construction of the
arbor was donated by Lamar and Frida Muston and Bertie Dettman (in honor of
Dorothy Gaisbauer's birthday).
Donating plants and planting them was Dick, Ivy, Lynni Melvin, Brenda Crews,
Carol Toohey, Suzanne Graham and Mary Nix. Two trees - a Shumard red oak and a
Retama, and part of the edging were purchased with funds donated by the Tai Chi
group that meets at the Center twice a week.
The plants are growing well in spite of the heat, thanks to Tom and Dick who
have turned the irrigation on for the flowers and watered the trees every other
day. It was a group project and if you haven't seen it, we invite you to walk
through it next time you are near the Center. All plants are labeled and we'll
have shade over the arbor as the vines grow!
Thanks to everyone who donated sweat, tears, money and plants - I don't remember anyone bleeding.
